Environmental Sculpture Workshops:

Based on his own artistic practice, the artist offers environmental sculpture workshops which give participants a "hands-on" experience of landscape, natural materials, places and their qualities and how the creative human being can intervene in a sensitive, creative way with Nature. These workshops include guided landscape observation, structured artistic expercises exploring various aspects of environmental sculpture practice, individual projects and a illustrated talk on the history of land-art and environmental sculpture. The artist has conducted such workshops for more than 15 years in the UK, USA, Germany and Israel. Environmental Workshops are suitable for both adults and youth from the age of 16 and their duration can vary between two and 5 days.

Goethean Observation Workshops:

Axel Ewald, in partnership with the biologist Dr. Margaret Colquhoun, developed a unique method of helping people to see Nature in its richness and lawfulness with "new eyes". This method is based on the work of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832), who - being an artist himself - laid the groundwork for a new scientific-artistic approach to the life-sciences in his extensive scientific writings. In this method the observing human being is taken seriously as an active participant in the research process, which includes the use of all the senses as well as the development of the feeling sensitivities of the human being as "tools" for a deeper penetration into the nature of the phenomena.

For this purpose guided observation of natural phenomena is complemented by artistic practice - in drawing, clay-modelling, painting, movement and other media - which allows the participants to deepen the experience of what they have observed and to internalize and individualize this experience. Some of the fruits of this work were included in the book "New Eyes for Plants" (Hawthorn Press, Stroud, Gloucestershire, UK) which Axel Ewald co-authored together with Dr. Margaret Colquhoun.

The artist has more than 20 years of experience in conducting such workshops in the UK, USA, Germany and Israel with groups of people of all ages and professions - including artists, medical professionals and teachers. Themes of these workshops include:

  • "New Eyes for Plants" - the metamorphosis of the plants
  • the secrets of the human skeleton
  • embryology and evolution
  • "Colour between Light and Darkness" - an introduction to Goethe's theory of color
  • landscape and man
